What it does

  • Gently exfoliates by digesting dead surface skin proteins.
  • An acid-free, non-abrasive way to smooth and brighten.
  • Popular in wash-off masks and powders.

How it works

Papain is a proteolytic enzyme widely documented to loosen and digest keratin in dead surface cells, giving gentle enzymatic exfoliation. Enzymes are dosed by activity units rather than simple percentage, need suitable pH/temperature, and are often kept anhydrous (powder) until use. Papain can be a sensitiser for some.

Use level

Typical use level
typically low levels per activity units

Dosed by enzyme activity rather than a fixed percentage; commonly used in wash-off masks and anhydrous powders that activate on mixing with water.

Formulation considerations

  • Activity-dependent; keep anhydrous or well-stabilised until use.
  • Needs suitable pH and temperature to stay active.
  • Can be a sensitiser; patch-testing advised.

What it pairs with & what to avoid

Pairs well with

  • Gentle hydrators
  • Soothing actives (post-exfoliation)

Use with care / avoid

  • Sensitisation potential
  • Harsh conditions that denature the enzyme

Regulatory status

Papain is listed in the EU CosIng database and is a well-established enzymatic exfoliant.
