What it does

  • Hydrates the skin surface.
  • Helps protect cells and biomolecules against dehydration and environmental stress.
  • Adds a light, comfortable feel.

How it works

Trehalose is exceptional at stabilising membranes and proteins during drying (a property behind the survival of some desiccation-tolerant organisms). In cosmetics it is widely documented as a humectant and osmoprotectant that helps maintain skin resilience under dry and stressful conditions. It complements betaine and ectoin.

Use level

Typical use level
typically 0.5–5%

Commonly 0.5–5%; often combined with other humectants and osmolytes rather than used alone.

Formulation considerations

  • Water-soluble; add to the water phase.
  • Very stable and broadly compatible.
  • Non-tacky at typical levels.

What it pairs with & what to avoid

Pairs well with

  • Glycerin, hyaluronic acid, betaine, ectoin
  • Barrier lipids to seal

Use with care / avoid

  • No notable incompatibilities

Regulatory status

Trehalose is listed in the EU CosIng database and is a well-established cosmetic ingredient.

Common questions

What does trehalose do for skin?

It hydrates and acts as an osmoprotectant, helping skin cells and proteins withstand dehydration and environmental stress.

What percentage of trehalose is used?

Typically 0.5–5%, often alongside other humectants.

Is trehalose better than glycerin?

They are complementary rather than competing; trehalose adds cell-protective, stress-resilience benefits, while glycerin is the benchmark all-round humectant.
