What it does

  • Draws and holds water in the upper skin layers for lasting hydration.
  • Supports the skin barrier and improves suppleness.
  • Improves the sensory feel and stability of many formulas.

How it works

Glycerin is a gold-standard humectant. It attracts water and, importantly, is widely documented to help normalise the skin's own moisture handling and support barrier function, not just sit on the surface. Its small size lets it integrate into the stratum corneum.

Typical use level

Extremely versatile, commonly 2–10%. Around 3–5% is a typical comfortable level; higher levels increase hydration but can feel sticky, which is often offset with emollients.

Formulation considerations

  • Fully water-miscible; add to the water phase.
  • Stable and compatible across essentially all cosmetic systems and pH.
  • High levels can feel tacky; balance with emollients or other humectants.
  • Also aids freeze-thaw stability and acts as a mild solvent.
