What it does

  • Exfoliates inside the pore lining to reduce congestion and blackheads.
  • Supports clearer, blemish-prone and oily skin.
  • Helps smooth texture and refine the look of pores.

How it works

As a lipophilic (oil-soluble) acid, salicylic acid penetrates sebum-filled pores where water-soluble AHAs cannot, loosening dead cells and clearing congestion. It also has mild anti-inflammatory character. Its free-acid exfoliating activity depends on a sufficiently low pH (around 3–4).

Cosmetic leave-on products commonly use 0.5–2%. Rinse-off products may use somewhat higher levels in some regions, subject to local rules.

Formulation considerations

  • Oil-soluble; requires a solubiliser or a suitable solvent system to stay dissolved in water-based products.
  • Needs low pH (around 3–4) for free-acid exfoliating activity.
  • Can recrystallise if solubilisation is inadequate.

  • Stacking with other strong acids or retinoids at once (irritation)

Salicylic acid is listed in the EU CosIng database and is subject to EU concentration limits and usage restrictions (for example limits differ for leave-on, rinse-off and certain product types, and there are restrictions for young children). Formulators should follow the current EU limits for their product type.
