What it does

  • Conditions and smooths hair, improving softness and manageability.
  • Forms a light film that helps the look and feel of stronger, healthier hair.
  • Popular in repair-positioned and post-chemical-treatment products.

How it works

Keratin is the structural protein of hair. Hydrolysing it produces smaller, water-soluble peptides that deposit on and into the hair shaft, widely documented to improve smoothness, moisture retention and the temporary appearance of strength. Benefits are cosmetic and build with use.

Use level

Typical use level
typically 1–5% of the (dilute) solution

Commonly used at 1–5% of the supplied (dilute) solution. It is supplied at a set protein concentration, so follow the supplier's guidance.

Formulation considerations

  • Water-soluble; add to the cool-down phase.
  • Formulate in mildly acidic to neutral systems.
  • Over-use of proteins can make hair feel stiff; balance with conditioning agents.

What it pairs with & what to avoid

Pairs well with

  • Panthenol and conditioning agents
  • Amino acids
  • Hair oils for slip

Use with care / avoid

  • Protein overload (stiff feel) — balance with moisture

Regulatory status

Hydrolyzed keratin is listed in the EU CosIng database and is a well-established hair-care ingredient.
