What it does

How it works

Alpha arbutin is widely documented to inhibit tyrosinase, the rate-limiting enzyme in melanin synthesis. Because it releases its active moiety slowly and is more stable than the beta isomer, it delivers brightening with good tolerance. It is often paired with actives that act by other routes (such as niacinamide or vitamin C) for a multi-pathway approach.

Commonly used at 0.5–2%. 2% is a frequently cited practical upper level in consumer skincare; higher levels are not clearly more effective and add cost.

Formulation considerations

  • Water-soluble; add to the cool-down water phase.
  • Most stable in mildly acidic to neutral products; very low pH and prolonged heat can hydrolyse it toward hydroquinone, so avoid high-heat holds.
  • Protect from prolonged high temperature during manufacture.
  • Compatible with most brightening actives.

Alpha arbutin is listed in the EU CosIng database and is widely used in cosmetics. Note that hydroquinone itself is not permitted in EU cosmetic products, which is part of why stable arbutin is popular.

Alpha arbutin vs kojic acid — what is the difference?

Both help with uneven tone by influencing tyrosinase, but alpha arbutin is more stable and generally gentler, while kojic acid can be more prone to oxidation and irritation. They are sometimes combined.

Is alpha arbutin safe?

It is widely used and generally well tolerated in cosmetics at typical levels. It is a more stable derivative rather than free hydroquinone.

Can I use alpha arbutin with vitamin C or niacinamide?
