What it does

  • Seals the skin surface and strongly reduces water loss.
  • Protects and supports the repair of very dry, cracked or compromised skin.
  • Inert, non-sensitising and highly stable.

How it works

Cosmetic-grade petrolatum is widely documented as the most effective occlusive available, reducing transepidermal water loss by a very large margin. It is inert and non-comedogenic in refined grades, and is a mainstay of barrier-repair and 'slugging' routines. Only refined, cosmetic-grade (USP) petrolatum should be used.

Use level

Typical use level
variable; commonly 2–30% (higher in ointments)

Commonly used at 2–30%; higher in ointments and balms. Use refined cosmetic/USP grade.

Formulation considerations

  • Oil-soluble semi-solid; melt into the oil phase.
  • Extremely stable and inert.
  • Occlusive, heavier finish.

What it pairs with & what to avoid

Pairs well with

  • Humectants beneath it (to hold water in)
  • Barrier lipids

Use with care / avoid

  • Unrefined grades (use cosmetic/USP grade only)

Regulatory status

Petrolatum is listed in the EU CosIng database; refined cosmetic-grade material is a long-established, well-tolerated occlusive.
