What it does

  • Softens and conditions the skin.
  • Emulsifies oil and water and improves texture.
  • Can form liposomes to help carry actives.

How it works

Lecithin is a mixture of phospholipids (such as phosphatidylcholine) widely documented as a skin-conditioning agent, emulsifier and liposome former. Its skin-identical phospholipids also support the barrier. Hydrogenated grades are more oxidation-stable.

Use level

Typical use level
typically 0.5–5%

Commonly used at 0.5–5% depending on its role (conditioning vs emulsifying/liposomal).

Formulation considerations

  • Amphiphilic; behaves as emulsifier and emollient.
  • Hydrogenated lecithin is more stable to oxidation.
  • Can carry oil-soluble actives in liposomes.

What it pairs with & what to avoid

Pairs well with

  • Barrier lipids
  • Actives for liposomal delivery

Use with care / avoid

  • Non-hydrogenated grades can oxidise

Regulatory status

Lecithin is listed in the EU CosIng database and is a long-established cosmetic ingredient.

Common questions

What does lecithin do in skincare?

It conditions skin, emulsifies oil and water, and can form liposomes to deliver actives.

What are liposomes?

Tiny phospholipid vesicles (formed by lecithin) that can encapsulate and help carry actives into the skin surface.

What percentage of lecithin is used?

Commonly 0.5–5%.
