What it does

  • Softens and deeply conditions very dry, chapped skin and lips.
  • Occlusive — helps reduce water loss.
  • Structurally similar to the skin's own surface lipids.

How it works

Lanolin is widely documented as an emollient and occlusive whose composition resembles human skin lipids, making it exceptional for chapped skin, lips and nipple care. Modern purified grades reduce impurities, but lanolin can still be a contact allergen for some.

Use level

Typical use level

Commonly used at 1–10% in creams and higher in balms; use purified cosmetic grades.

Formulation considerations

  • Oil-soluble/waxy; melt into the oil phase.
  • Rich, sticky feel — balance with lighter emollients.
  • Can be a contact allergen for some; patch-testing advised.
